don john - exhibition july/august 2008
stencil art with an extraordinary experience
vernissage: july 26th, 2008 - 11h
don john tries to create paintings that leaves the viewer with a mixed
feeling of melancholy and beauty. it has never been his intention to make paintings that force feed the viewer with a specific message. one of his creates joys is to hear how people interpret and sometimes over
interpret his paintings. if he has made a painting that makes an
impression on the viewer (good or bad) and leaves he or she with an
extraordinary experience, then he has received his goal.
he gets his experience from all kind of sources but mainly music and
street art. often he gets the idea for a picture just before falling
asleep, when half awake, half dreaming.
he's doing most of his stencils on scrap plywood. the reason for this is that
he likes the somewhat organic feel and individuality that it creates
compared to a normal standard canvas. on top of that, he likes the idea
that he can reuse and create a painting of value to some, on something
that would have otherwise ended in the dump.....
